What we'll be doing...

All of us have been placed in small teams. Each of the teams will be hosted by a church in Durban where we'll be worshipping with them on both Sundays while we are there.

Connected to these churches are community projects, and each team will be serving these projects. Some projects are very well established and growing - we are there to help with a holiday club or to help get a new service started. Others are fairly new and again, the teams serving those projects will be helping get things started.

My (Laura Anne's) team is going to be serving a project which has a vision to empower people who are infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS to live meaningful lives.

The project does this by focusing on:

  • Counselling - to fight the stigma of HIV/AIDS
  • a Socialising Group  for people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS
  • an Outreach Project for home based care
  • Caring for orphans and vulnerable children by providing stationary, food parcels and uniforms
  • Fighting poverty and creating job opportunities through income generating projects e.g. gardening, sewing, craft work.

How we'll (probably) be involved?

I say 'probably' as things can change. The African's are much more laid back and chilled than us 'Westerners'...!

-Children's Work
-Basic painting and decorating
-Support group

This hopefully gives you a flavour for what we'll be getting up to, although we could arrive to discover we're on different teams or that we've been placed with a different project or given different work to do. We shall see in July!
